Sid Yarbrough ('55) Testimonial on Heritage Society

In September 1951, my parents had the foresight to enroll me as a freshman at Darlington School for Boys in Rome, Ga. In their minds, this was considered the finest thing they could give their son and, indeed, it was just what they believed, one fine gift.

I spent the next four years enjoying all Darlington School could offer and I could digest - learning to study alone, the camaraderie of boarding life, the joy and work of engaging in seasonal athletics, class politics, living by an Honor Code, later becoming vice president of the Honor Council, choosing the D club sponsor, my mom, and yes, last but most importantly, savoring all the academic challenges from Wilcox, Wright, Yankee Sr. and Jr., Judd, Moser, Cunningham, Stukes and King. My goal was to go to medical school and become a physician. With the extraordinary push from these gentlemen listed, I achieved my goal. Further, with Mr. Judd's help I majored in chemistry at Emory University. While there, I was told that if I made an A in organic chemistry, I would get into Medical School and I did.

After four years of college, marrying Becky Kendrick in June 1959, followed by four years at Emory University School of Medicine, I graduated and became a medical doctor. I then completed an orthopedic residency in the Emory University program. We moved back home to Columbus, Ga., in July 1970, and raised three sons who, by their own choice, also participated in four years of boarding prep school education. For all this and more, I thank my parents, especially for their wise decision of having the Darlington experience as my secondary school education.

Herein is found my main reason for making a provision for Darlington in my estate plans.

Sidney H. Yarbrough III, M.D.
