A Passion For The Future

John Shearer (’62) speaks of searching for truth, doing good things, and being himself. His search for truth and his musical education were fostered at Darlington by those he calls “very gifted teachers.” He now continues that search through many mediums. He is a pilot, firefighter, certified Yoga instructor, and traveling acoustic blues musician. He has had his share of struggles along the way, but he says, “I’ve never been happier, more serene, more fulfilled, and more challenged to speak what I’ve learned to be some of the truth.”

In 2012, John and his classmates celebrated their 50th reunion back where it all began, Darlington School. During his time back on campus, John was invited to give a musical performance and host a master class for guitar students. His performance in the Chapel brought the student body to their feet, clapping and singing along to the music. The experience rekindled his love for Darlington and inspired him to support the school and programs that helped nurture his interest through a planned gift. By making a provision in his estate planning, John will continue his search for the truth and his passion for music, while helping Darlington plan for its future.

Making a planned gift is a very simple process which can take multiple forms and can help you address a variety of personal financial goals. Like John, we’re ready to work with you to craft the gift plan that best meets your goals and objectives. A planned gift of any size qualifies you for membership in the J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society, named to honor the tireless dedication and service of our distinguished alumnus J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27). For more information about planned giving, please contact Julie W. Lucas, Chief Advancement Officer, [email protected], 404-791-3574.
